Course Description
A survey of important works of American literature. Designed to foster in students some knowledge and appreciation of American literature from the 16th century pre-colonial to the mid-19th century (Civil War). Lectures, discussions, and research focus on major figures, works, and movements in historical context, with special attention to themes and techniques of literary analysis and to the influence of philosophical and religious views on the literature. Prerequisite(s): ENGL 1102 or ENGL 1102H, with a minimum grade of C.
